The Medieval Coroner (Cambridge Studies in English Legal History.)
Published in Hardcover by Wm Gaunt & Sons (June, 1986)
Author: R. F. Hunnisett
Average review score:

The definitive study of this subject
First published in 1961, R.F. Hunisett's "The Medieval Coroner" is a scholarly book rather than a piece of popular history. However, it's not too jargon-laden and there is a glossary of legal/historical terms included. It ought to be of interest to those interested in medieval history, legal history, and (albeit to a lesser degree), forensic medicine. Fans of medieval mystery novels mgith also enjoy this. As Hunniset explains, medieval coroners engaged in many of the same practices as modern coroners. Whenever an unknown body was found, or whenever a person died under circumstances that were "sudden, accidental, violent, or suspicious", a coroner was required to investigate, examine the body for all signs of wounds, and to conduct an inquest into the cause of death. However, medieval coroners had other important judicial functions, including hearing/recording the confessions of admitted felons, hearing/recording accusations of felonies, and issuing exactions for their appearance in court, assessing the value of murder weapons and property owned by felons (which would be confiscated by the crown), and several others. Hunniset discusses these various functions in separate chapters, and provides numerous examples from primary sources. He also discusses how the office evolved from the time of its creation in 1194 through the early Renaissance. Though forty years old, this book remains the definitive study of this unusual, but important subject.

Comprehensive and Interesting
This volume, one of seven in the series (though volume four has two parts), contains an abundance of information despite its limited (in terms of chronology) scope. All aspects of the Middle Ages, ranging from political, social, and military, are covered. Excellent source of information and a good place to start when doing any research during this time period.

The New Cambridge Modern History: Volume 1, The Renaissance 1493-1520

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "The Renaissance"
This volume is the first in the series called the "New Cambridge Modern History." Although the series purports to be a history of the world, with this volume covering the years from 1493 (the discovery of the new world) until 1520 (the time of Luther and the start of the religious wars), and although the series has more of a world view than does some United States text books, the series still shares the western European view of the world which is biased toward Europe and neglects Asia and Africa. Accordingly, the series remains a history of Europe rather than a history of the entire world.

However, taken on its own terms as a history of Europe it is a really fine and balanced approach to the subject matter. All facets of the various conflicts in Europe in the period of time just prior to the Refomation are covered in a very complete manner in this particular volume. The writing style has appeal to students of all levels of learning. Coming back to volume after reading other books on the subject can be a rewarding experience. Additionally, finishing one volume leaves the reader with a thirst to start the next in the series.

Math
This book was very helpful to me. I had been having problems with certain types of math problems and this book explains them very well. I first got this book from my local library and liked it so much I needed to buy it. It has everything from addition and subtraction to algebra. I hope this review is helpful to anyone who reads it.

Success at First Certificate
I used this book to teach ENL English in Greece in its first edition for the old FCE and since it was published in its second edition in 1997 for the new version of the test. I have found that the book presents the material required for a good pass on the UCLES FCE broadly enough without burdening the student with too academic a description of the Grammar. Its grammar exercises, supplemented by the exercises in the workbook, are brilliant in their review of English grammar and in the way they prepare the student for the exam. Also, it's writing course, which I consider the best of all from all the course books I have used, is not only accurate, but teaches text formating not only brilliantly for the exam, but also for use in everyday situations unrelated to the exam. The only flaw I saw was in the companion: its reading texts were too difficult. However, its collocation exercises cannot be found elsewhere.

A reexamination of Griesbach
Not simply a reexamination of the Griesbach / Two-Gospel theory, but a shaking to the foundations of Q and Markan priority. These 20 papers offer insights that would alter quite radically the dating of the Synopitcs and reassert traditional Matthean priority.

Nothing but Heather

Author: Gerry Cambridge
Average review score:

Nothing but Fantastic!
Gerry Cambridge knows Scotland intimately -- every nook and cranny, it would seem. His photographs of flora and fauna are lovingly taken, and reveal an intimacy with the subject. Whether the scales of a moth's wing, the tiny but fierce face of a wolf spider, or the simple beauty of fallen maple leaves, Cambridge's photos capture the coutryside of Scotland. Not to be outdone is his verse, which runs alongside the photos. Cambridge is a deft poet; his words form lush pictures of their own. Together, the poet and photographer has created a glimpse of natural Scotland that is a feast for the eyes, and for the ears when the poems are read aloud; his fine work is a must for anyone who loves poetry, nature, and Scotland.
